On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.
This year, a year-long campaign to celebrate the work of existing volunteers, address the challenges they face and encourage more people to get involved.
Volunteering benefits everybody and brings communities closer together. For volunteers, it's a way to give something back to society and pick up new skills. It takes many forms, like helping out at a sports club, school, hospital or charity. Today, about 20% of Europeans give up their time to volunteer.
The European year of Volunteering aims to encourage more people to get involved by:
Europe Day (9 May) is the occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and peoples of the Union closer to one another. Europe Day is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy a good atmosphere and a variety of cultural programs, which besides their entertaining role, serve as an opportunity to draw attention to the European goals and values.
In Hungary, the Europe Direct Network is organising a variety of activities throughout the country in about 14 locations. More information is available here>>.
