VIVA ANIMA – Excellency in training and treatment

2011, Oradea: 51% of deaths in Romania are caused by cardio-vascular diseases; Maximum therapeutic window for the treatment of major cardiovascular emergencies: 90 minutes; Nearest interventional cardiology centre – 150 km (110 minutes) (Cluj-Napoca).

By bringing together passionate professionals from Oradea and Debrecen the Viva Anima project set out to create a brand new Euro-regional Centre for Invasive Cardio-Vascular Interventions named “Viva Anima”, filling in a long existing gap in the health care system of Bihor County.

The two main components of the project, training of the professionals and establishing the cardiology centre, were carried out simultaneously over 24-months period starting from 2011. 35 trainees from the Emergency County Hospital of Oradea attended the specific courses organised within the “Viva Anima School”. With the help of the Hungarian medical staff (26 doctors and nurses) from the Auguszta Clinic in Debrecen they could get the specific training and guidance needed to operate the cardiology centre.

The Viva Anima Centre was brought to life within the building of the Emergency County Hospital Oradea on a 783 sqm surface and hosts the angiography area (2 high performance angiography machines able to function simultaneously), surgery area, 4 medical rooms (EKG, ECG, effort test, consultation), coronary care unit (16 beds) and all the needed annexes. The centre is fitted with special ventilation, medical gas systems as well as high standard medical equipment. Starting with December 2013 a 24-7 service is available to ensure treatment of patients with AMI. There is also free capacity to accept transfer of patients in need of specialised services from neighbouring counties (eg. Salaj, Satu-Mare).

Facts and figures
2013
- Number of patients who have addressed the Laboratory of Interventional Cardiology - 675
- Number of cases needing stents - 193
- Number of cases treated Interventional with AMI (acute myocardial infarction) (STEMI) – 96

In December 2013 all patients hospitalised for AMI received appropriate treatment, without having to transfer to other medical centres in the country.

January-February 2014
- Total number of patients - 211

Treatment of 74 patients of which:
- The number of interventions associated with AMI (STEMI) - January - 15 patients, February - 26 patients
- Elective interventional procedures - 33 patients
By implementing this project the hospital now receives better financing for each case solved, similar to other clinical hospitals that have similar features. This ensures optimal treatment in a modern therapeutic section and increases the chances of survival, at the same time lowering costs by reducing re-admissions, emergency transportation expenses to other hospitals and avoiding the transfer of funds allocated to Bihor County to other counties.
